HOLIDAY RACING
AUCKLAND CUP WON BY MASCOT NANNA'S RAILWAY HANDICAP NOBLEMAN WINS MANAWATU CUP By Telegraph.—Special Correspondent. Auckland, December 26. The Auckland .Racing Club was favoured with perfect weather for .the opening day of its Summer Meeting. There was a great attendance. Special race trains were pnt on, and there wius, no difficulty in carrying the people, to and from the course. The tolalisator was largely "maimed by women." The going was hard. The totalizator put through ,£71,314, against £78, 149 10s, on rlie corresponding day last year, a deovasc of ,£4835 10s. Surveyor, who looked the pick of the field, wiis made a hot favourite in the Great Northern l'oal Stakes. He got away badly, but Emerson handled hiin very confidently and had the field beaten at the entrance to the straight. Bitholia ran a good race, but was just beaten for second place by Crenidss, who came with a great dash at the finish, but was unable to trouble Surveyor. The Cup was Mascot's race from beginning to end. She jumped out from the tapes with Red Ribbon, and made the running. Red Ribbon could not keep up the pace, and the only others at all, prominent were Blue Cross, Kilmoon, and Sasanof. The last-named horse ran a great race, and put in h'.s challenge half a mile from home. He fought it out most gamely, but the weight told, and in the last hundred yards he could not step it with Mascot. Tho Grafton Hurdles was well '.von by Loyal Arch, who fought it out with Wnimai for a luile and a half, when bladful put in his claim, but, though he made a big effort, he could not lower Loval Arch's colours. the Robinson Handicap was won by Lionskin, but she had to fight for her victory from the tapes to the winning post. Queen Abbey was alongside her until the straight was lieared, wheu slie was displaced by Athens. 11, who was only a neck from the winner as the pair dashed past the post. . For the Railway. Handicap Iving Lupin, Form Up, Gazique, Onslaught, silver Link, Hymestra, and Nanna were the favourites. It was one of the' best races of the day. Half a doaen horses were proclaimed winners by the public as ilie field swept into the straight, but Nanna, who held a good position througbout, singled herself out at this point, faazinue and Silver Link (who got a'"! badly and had a bad run) came at her in great style, but Nanna held the lead long enough to win.
