THE RECENT EPIDEMIC

HOW BROOKLYN FARED. The final report of the Brooklyn Epidemic Committee has been issued, it mentions that in order to coucentrato the doctors' services it was found necessary to establish a. hospital. With the assistance of Mr. Maddison, who proved' himself an indefatigable worker, the hospital iras opened on November 18, under Nurse Manning and her willing staff. Two shifts were found insufficient, as the workers were dropping from sheer fatigue, therefore' 011 the morning ot November "23, the dale when the hospital was taken over by the Defenco Department, three shifts of workers wero inaugurated.. Too much praiso could not 'be bestowed on every branch of the hospital activities. The doctors, the matron, the quartermaster, the ward superintendents, tho nurses—men and women, the cooks and their assistants—all were not only assiduous in tho performance ot their duties, but were continuously cheerful and bright. Forty-seven patients, who may be counted as being among the most serious cases in tho district, were admitted, and there were eight deaths. Some marvellous cures were effected. The fine results of tho hospital work were the best arguments in support of its establishment. "While sympathising heartily with those who lost their dear ones," the report continues, "we believe there should be intense gratitude that a wholesale tragedy was averted, and that at a time when the issues were unknown the community knit together by such a spirit ot self-sacrifice. May the results of this great work tend to bind the whole district together, so that in any future crisis it shall be ready at a, moment's notice to spring to attention nnd do deeds just ns brave and kindly as have been done in tho recent epidemic. Tho local committee has done its work well. Tho executive sincerely trusts that the Government will now do its part."
