NOTES AND COMMENTS - ..[By Glescoe/J ..'.'.. The Manawatu Earing CltiVs summer fixture, to be held at. Awapuni on Boxing .Day and the following, day, will - be the principal attraction for Wellington sportsmen during the holidays. All Hie trains will stop at Awapuni, and on the first <lay .there will be a fast speciol to Wellington after 'tho. last race. . This will make for a big attendance of the public, and there should be a. record crowd to see the Cup run. Good fields
are engaged in all the events, and tho day's racing should bo full of interest. Kilinoon is still the best fancied in tho Auckland Cup, whilst Onslaught andUazique are tl)o most spoken of in connection with the Bnilway Handicap. For tho l'almei'iton Meeting Client is .first choice for the Cup, whilst Inali and Torfreda are the best liked in tho sprint.
The field for tho Otngo Handicap at tho Duhedin Meeting on .Boxing Day will not be up to the .standard expected for a ,£51)0 stake. Originally there were seven acceptors, but since then Punka has been withdrawn, and it is now stated that Borko's Drift is an unlikely starter. This leaves Adjutant opposed by four .moderates, and as the Chokebpre repre--eentative always does his best in a email field' lio may. go out a good favourite. ' Prior to going south ho galloped particularly well at Riccarton., In addition to Adjutant -Sir Georgo Clifford' will be. represented at Wingatui by Wild Night, a full-brother, to Onslaught. The son of Antagonist is engaged in tho Burnside Handicap, six furlongs, in what appears to be a weak field.
Though ho also figures amongst the acceptances for the principal handicap at the Tai-anaki.Mceting.it is generally understood that Eewi Poto is to bo d starter in tho Mannwntu Cup. Sir William, winner of the Hack Hurdles at. the last Wnverley Meeting, is amongst tho acceptors for the jumping event at the Taranaki Meeting. He is by.Papakiira, whoso stock all jump well. .'Alteration,, winner of the big Handicap at Hawera in the spring, is engaged in the Christmas-.Handicap, at the Tni'aiiaki Meeting, when he scored at Eginont Alteration beat Detroit pointless, and by winning the principal handicap at Otaki tho following week Detroit made the ligmont form ont to he good. In the Tikornngi Hack Stakes at New Plymouth oti Boxing Hay all the -runners carry Bst. -.'Were the event a handicap .Staccato would have to concede the others .a lot of weight, and on this account the Husbandman mare is likely to go out a good favourite.
When Braid .ran Long Tlnngo to-a halfhead in .the Duncdin Guineas tho mile Was-run-in linin. 4250 c.. On-Boxing Day the Piccarton filly has an engagement in the Federal Handicap at Wingatni,_and as she lias only got 7st. 121b. to carry sbo may be one of the well-fancied division. "' ■ ■ When next. Sardinia races hew-ill'prob-ably carry'the colours of the I'rentham trainer,. J. Scott. Pervolo has again joined the workers .at Trent-ham. Sho'has developed into a fine big mare daring her long spell. An extraordinary mistake was' made in. placing the first three horses in the. Yillievs Stakes, run at Pandwick on Saturday. Tho judge' awarded third place to Pamicre, but the third horse was actually Sydney Damsel, whilst Pnn.icre finished in t lie -ruck—in'fourteenth place, according to the cablegram. As the judge did not alter bis decision before.Hie horses' weighed in, •Panacre was officially entered as third. Paragraph 193 of the - Australian rules of racing reads as follows:—"The delei-miii-ali.nn of. a judge declaring- a horse to have, won,' or to be entitled to n place, shall be final, unless an objection" is made.and allowed :on the ground of disqualification: -Provided that (bis rule shall, mot-prevent a- ji.d:. r o from correcting any mistake before the placed horses ■arc weighed in." The cause of the mix up is said to have been in the judge art ling-1 be (wo horses' colours confused. Pn nacre's jockey would carry "all pink" livery, whilst the rider of Sydney Dam■fiel jwniild carry "pink, black spots,-and black-cap." On the ground of a. confu.sion •■in- colours there does not seem (o be-much reason for the weird mistake, •but- when- the. mail arrives more will be known about the misplacing ihnn was conveyed in the brief message from Sydney. • Seeing -that Panacre. is owned by a' well-known Sydney sportsman, in Mr. .T.- f'ampbell ;Wond, Ibe • unlucky owner of Sydney Damsel would very- likely be paid (he third place money (i 80) by Mr. ■Wood. .
To have won'the Villiers Sialics in the record time of lmin. 37;] see. (equal to the ■Anslr-aliim record held by J'nrtrnsli, Montcalm,, and Biplane), ■ carrying the steadier of list. KIM)., proclaims Hebiis w • bo-one of the best handicap horses in Australia to-day-. Last season, when Mr." Joe-'Lemon's (a well-known' Sydney .pcncilier) horse.won the Sydney Cup jt ;.was' thought-that the son oi' Radium was .a-distance ho'.w. Tn the Epsom Hamlit.ip, run last October, Hebus went „,ut <at-a good price, and won! "Before that ir'aee it", was-the opinion of Uuslralhm •■writers that- he would not be able to. start "quick" enough"' to 'have a winning •chance, but he started quick enough—too quick, in fact, for the.'rest-of"the field— and won in "38." • Ho improved on this ■performance.' on Saturday. Hebiis was bred-in iflU'at the Southport Stud, Iceland, and'is by .Pisidiiim (winner of 6729 .sovs.Vfrnm Quibble. He is engaged in the A..LC-. Summer Cup, run on Hosing >Day, with' flsr. 5ll>„ but for his win on Saturday ho. will, have to put tip a 101b. penalty.
Mr. R. B. Lunk, who officiates nl Ellerslio, will be judge at the forthcoming Ticnlham fixture. ' The New Zealand Racing Clubs have donated to patriotic funds, subscribed to rear loan?, and paid in taxation to (he New Zealand Government a sum of =■£781.531-15s;-M. The Slimmer Meeting of the Egmont Racing Club will be held on Wednesday and -Thursday, Fobrunry 12 and 13, 191!). Nominations close on January 17, at 8 p.m. The programme of events is advertised in this issue. Ih is stated that L. Traill, who has been absent from the pigskin for some time, will don silk at Auckland.
