WARNING TO MOTORISTS
• Sir,—ln view of the increased' motor traffic (luring the holiday season, I desire to caution motorists as to descending Paekakariki hill on the north side.. The descent at'the starting point w<i3 formerlv safe enough, as the road ran through « block cutting, but some time ago' the Hutt County Council removed the bank on the northern side of the road, thereby creating a real danger to the travelling pub\ic. In an uncertain light, the widened portion, being tho same colour as the general road, leads one to believe that by keeping straight on he would be in safety, whereas tho opposite is tho case, as the road bends very sharply to the right. It is very hard to understand the council's reason for its action, especially as nothing whateversjias been erected in place of the removed bank. This corner, to my mind, is by far the most dangerous portion of tho Whole hill. Ido not wish to frighten anyone, but care should be exercised at the point mentioned, otherwise the next port of call w.ill be the' railway line below—a clear drop of some 1300 feet. Though I have been over the hill dozens of times, it never appeared a dangerous corner before, but last evening, in a. bad lfcht, I should have kept straight on, witb disastrous results, had T not been thoroughly acquainted with the locality. _I am ' etC - J. G. STEVENS. December 21.
