GOVERNMENT AND THE DEADLOCK
The Government docs not consider that it would be wise policy for \ the country fb make itself responsible absolutely for th? New Zeahmders now stranded in Sydney owing to' the interruption of the steamer service. Sir James Allen stated yesterday that he had telegraphed the New Zealand agent in Sydney to see that none of out people was left destitute, leaving 'him to exercise his discretion as to wlwt ought to be done. Ho did not consider that the Government could advise the steamship company to pay the men their extortionate demands, even in this exceptional case, for this would be inviting the same demand for every ship on the seas.
It is stated that there i.i no prospect of the firemen signing on to take the ship out of port before the holidays.
