BREEDING HEAVY HORSES
Tho first thing which the farmer who snes to improve his position bv breedS heavy horses must hew in mind (says ■ Jinghsh writer) is that it is impossible •breed Rood horses from bad marcs, '■gm with a useful sort, well bred and und, if the sweets of success are to. be Jted. It is fatal to breed from old, •rn-out mares, however good thev may >ve once been. The sires must also be refully selected and tho mating done uiciously. From the very beginning re, attention, and enterprise are reared. The age, also, at which it is best breed requires consideration. There e many who breed successfully from o-year-old fillies, and if they havo been '11 nurtured there is no objection to .ttimj these to the stud. "When this is he, however, they require very liberal mtment, both during the period of gMtion and whilst they are suckling their da. It seems hardly necessary to say at a two-year-old filly in foal should ver be worked, and that overy care ould bs taken to handle her frequently that she may become used to the pre:ce of men about her and taught not to iist being touched.
