STRANDED IN SYDNEY
PLIGHT OF 300 NEW ZEALANDERS
AN AMAZING DEADLOCK
As recently cn.bleu, some 300 H-qv Zealanders stranded in Sydney have appealed to the Acting-Prime" Minister (Sir James Allen) to assist them to get back to the Dominion quickly. They are held up- at present owing to the firemen demanding special rates of pay to man ships for-New Zealand. It is represented that some of the New Zoalanders delayed in Australia have exhausted their funds and are in a difficult position. Sir James Allen staled on Saturday that ho had referred tho appeal to (ho general manager of the Union Company at Dunedin. The Government was not fii a position to assist. Tt could not require the shipping company to pay the extortionate rates demanded by the firemen.
A FURTHER APPEAL. (E-ec. December 22, 5.5 p.m.) Sydney, December 22. Mr. W. Blow, New Zealand Government agent, has dispatched a furthor cable message to the Acting-Prime Minister of New Zealand urging an immediate effort to influence tbo Union Steam Ship Company to dispatch the Moeraki in the interests of women and children whose funds are exhausted. Several passengers have offered to subscribe towards the difference in the pay, which is causing the delay."—Press Assn.
