' The Island Bay Influenza .Epidemic Committee, reporting-upon its.activities' during and in connection with .the recent epidemic, thank' those ■ residents who cniuo forward 40 generously and wholeheartedly to render assistance. Tho committee stale that where so many voluntary hclprirs did their shave in. assisting, to tend the -sufferers it would be invidious and undesirable, to select any person 01 persons for- particular mention, but perhaps an exception may.be made in regard to the 13oy, Scouts -who did such splendid service, the, value of wliich it is impossible to estimate... It .was .very encouraging to the committee to find porsons of. all ages, men and women, boys mid girls, coming forward to.', offer assistance in service or kind,, or both. This was a, time wlieu the true spirit of the British. race was made manifest, and people were united in a boiid'of brotherhood for the. purpose of, tending and relieving those who were .suffering from the scourge which had suddenly attacked the people of tliis Dominion. Dealing with tho actual work performed, the committee report that about, 400 cases wero dealt, with through tho depot. Of these 100 cases twelve-ended'fatally', a result which was deeply regretted by every helper; At th&'same timo the' committee has no hesitation" in seating that everything humanly riossiblo;was done with the object of saving these , . lives. To the doctors" appointed to.'the district the committee, express very sincere and hearty appreciatibn.' Though weary with many days of many-hours' striving and working"to-defeat the disease, they were nlways kindly, courteous, and genuinely willing to come forward to do their utmost to relieve .the sick, and suffering. Mention in this connection is made of Dr. (Captain)'BrcWtf, late of Invercargill, ivho gave voluntary ' advice v and assistance every evening during the epidemic. The committee express sincere thnnks to the following :r-The Commercial Travellers' Club for large quantities of foodBtuffs andcoolinif drinks; the D.I.C. for soups and beef tea; Mr. Olsen and Mr. ifetin (Jloughton Bay) for milk, and all those residoiits who came forward so spontaneously and by : their action enabled the committee to keep every invalid fully suppliedwith nourishing foods and cooling drinks.
