The appointment of Mrs. Emily Herbert Maguire to ono of the vacant seals in the Auckland City Council is a graceful compliment to the Civic League, of which body Mrs. Maguire was the ahlo and capable president during last year, says the "Star." In speaking to the nomination the Mayor paid a tribute to the heroic work-done in the city during tho recent epidemic, and said no greater appreciation could bo shown than in plncing women in positions where they would bo enabled to successfully combat conditions of dirt and insaiiilalinn which provide lodgment for any passim; disease. That the condition of n town had nothing to do with hnrbpuring dispusu could hardly be held when the efforts of the United Slates in Panama, were considered and the almost total disappearance of the dreadod yellow fevers which followed civic cleanliness. In Mrs. Maguirc the council would gain a clear and ablo speaker, who had fine organising ability and one to whom the city could look forward with entire confidence that the .position to which she had been elected would be filled with appreciation, common sense, and cour> age.
