The council; however, was later ..informed that the Minister of Internal Affairs had declined to endorse the institute's recommendation in respect to the grant to Messrs.' La Trobc and Adams. . ' , The library account was credited during the year with .09 Us. Bd., together with n balanco of ,£6B Is. 7d.' from last, year's account, making a total of ,£iO7 16s. 3d. The expenses amounted to £\& 14s. Id., leaving a.credit balance of ,£BD 2s. 2d. The report was adopted. The elnction of officers resulted as follows:—President, Mr. P. W. Holmes; vice-presidents, Dirs. C. E. Adams and Allan Thomson; secretary, Mr. C. G. Or. Berry; committee, Professors Ensterfield nnd-Kirk, Dr. C. A. Cotton, Messrs. P. G. Morgan, B. C. Aston,' F. AY. Furkett, and W. Donovan. After the close of the general business papers were read by Mr. P. '&'.. Morgan 'Director of Geological Surveys) on "Clays"; by Mr. W. Donovan on "Oil Shales from Waikaia"; and Mr. E. Phil-lips-Turner on graphs, showing tho rate of growth of New Zealnnd trees. ■
