Wif Holmes presided,-in the absence of Mi-; Ooorgo Hogben.who was confined to his home through illness.--, . ■■■■■. v The annual, report stated that duringthe past year seven general meetings'' of the 6ocietiy ivero held,- and'papers and addresses-on various'subjects 'were l read and-delivered find "discussed. ' The' membership', on September -30 last was' 174; ten being life members. Twentythree members were at that time on active service, and two. had been killed at the front. During' the year thirteen new members were.electbd, and dx liad resigned. The names of Se'rgeant-Mnijpr I;; J. Comrie and Dr. .W. 11;' Thomson had been added to the" Boll'of Honour' during'jhe'year. A sum'of £1 IGs. Cd:, was paid on behalf of.:the asfrpnoniicaX'! section of the society'for mounting' and. King telescope," a fid , the,' section was fu'ij-. ther authorised to-- incur a liability to an, amount not exceeding J2Q' 'lor the cur-:' rent year. Five giiindns ; liad bpen,'donated by the Council to the itamsay Memorial -Fund.' . .". . .. . ' 'Pursuant to a'recommendation, of the., committee of the' Hamilton Memorial Fund that .the 'balance, of-. .the fund, should be invested by the New ZealandInstitute, and that each year one-half of the interest should be added to. the principal, the other .half of the interest to be devoted to the Hamilton prize, the council had; wlopfed the recommendation and formulated., a number, of conditions relating to .the awarding'of .the'prize. The New, Zealand. Institute had au-. thorised their Standing. Committee to co-operate with the society in arranging terms upon which the balance of the fund should be handed over in trust to the trustees. .:•■'■ ■ A notification was received from the secretary of the New Zealand Institute that the sum of-.Csoo.had been Voted the institute as a grant for research work. The institute.also advised' that applications from Professor Easterfield for .£SO for carrying out- investigations on the wax contents of brown con.ls,. and froiu Messrs. La Trobe and Adams for a fur- , (her t£"s towards the construction of a tide-predicting maohino, and were ■recommended for npproval. The council; however, was later ..informed that the Minister of Internal Affairs had declined to endorse the institute's recommendation in respect to the grant to Messrs.' La Trobc and Adams. . ' , The library account was credited during the year with .09 Us. Bd., together with n balanco of ,£6B Is. 7d.' from last, year's account, making a total of ,£iO7 16s. 3d. The expenses amounted to £\& 14s. Id., leaving a.credit balance of ,£BD 2s. 2d. The report was adopted. The elnction of officers resulted as follows:—President, Mr. P. W. Holmes; vice-presidents, Dirs. C. E. Adams and Allan Thomson; secretary, Mr. C. G. Or. Berry; committee, Professors Ensterfield nnd-Kirk, Dr. C. A. Cotton, Messrs. P. G. Morgan, B. C. Aston,' F. AY. Furkett, and W. Donovan. After the close of the general business papers were read by Mr. P. '&'.. Morgan 'Director of Geological Surveys) on "Clays"; by Mr. W. Donovan on "Oil Shales from Waikaia"; and Mr. E. Phil-lips-Turner on graphs, showing tho rate of growth of New Zealnnd trees. ■
