!W SOUTH WAI.KS GOVERNMENT ! SCHEME. The New Soutii Wales State calf-rear- ; depot at Kaymond Terrace was oflilly opened by the Minister of lands •November 23. The scheme lias been operation i'ur the Inst two months with at are, officially, considered most engaging results at both Albion Park, Hho Sontli Coast, and Raymond Terje,/ on the uovtli. Mr. Asliford inicted the arrangements at tho Enyind Terrace depot, where 310 calves 3 on hand, including the feeding proion and tho precautionary measures |ento obviate disease us far as possible. Sly four calves have been lost at Kayjnd Terrace. At that depot very collide' arrangements have been niado for iding the calves, especially to provido it each nnimai ; gets its right quota of Jk. Adjacent to the shelter shed small fds are provided, so that the calves get exercise and sunlight, and be--sen every two yards are hay-racks and tin troughs. There are 1(> of these ids, and adjoining them are two larger [ds, where calves are run in rotation accustom them to unrestricted liberty, tronnding the yards is a paddock of (acres, with additional land available, fcre the calves from six weeks old are Itured. In the grain shed, oats, maize, Isecd meal, and prepared foods are (red. - Tho latter are for testing in iiparison as to tho value with tho :tem adopted at the depot, viz., feedt whole milk to 14 days of astc, subsisting whey for whole mill: during the .lowing iour days, during which time e calf is encouraged to eat dry feed— itslied oats, maize, lucerne, and grass y and linseed meal. To tho termination of their stay at 3 depot (1G weeks of age) tho calves jeivo gradually increasing quantities ■ whey to the maximum of two gallons ily. The calves, after, 14 days, are ren as mucli grain and hay as they .lit, and also water, whilo a lick is ovided, consisting of coarse salt, sulate of iron, and sweet bone, meal.. iere are two brick cemented silos, canle of holding six months' requirements oats rind maize, but no grain has been' ired in them yet. A grain crusher is inided in the plant, as tho calves, till e weeks old, prefer the grain crushed, isteam boiler is utilised for sterilising id troughs, tanks, and utensils, and pidly warming up the whole milk r.r icy.' Calves showing signs ; sickness are immediately isolated and t in yards retained for that purpose.
