TRAMWAY MANAGEMENT, OR MISMANAGEMENT
(To the Editor.) Sir,—Don't you think it is about time the public began to take some interest in the management of our tramways department? I make a definite charge against .the Mayor and the tramways department and council. I say that the public convenience and comfort aie two of the last things considered. For ten years the system has lacked 25 per cent, of the rolling stock it ought to possess, with the result that at all busy times the public travel at a maximum of discomfort. No one grumbles at'the fares; they are quite reasonable— too low, if anything. What we do grumble at is that the council' makes no provision of rolling stock to cope with the traffic its quite reasonable fares attract. It is no use blaming tho war for this deficiency. It existed long before the war.' There fieeins to bo no lack of money or material to carry new lines to new suburbs, but an absolute famine of both to equip properly lines already in existence. One point more, Sir. It is cruelty to ask people to sit behind glass windows with a blazing hot sun and no curtains or louvres to protect them from the sun's rays. Some day an enrnjred populace will rise up and demand the blood of those who grossly mismanage our systems of transit.—l am, etc., COMMON SENSE. December 17, 1918. ' )
