DEATH OF MR. C. C KETTLE

Mr. Charles Cargill Kettle, formerly Stipendiary Magistrate at Auckland, died in that city yesterday. Mr. Kettle, who was born in Dunedin 69 years ago,, was the son of -Mr. Charles Henry Kettle, who surveyed and laid off Dunedin city. Upon admission to the Bar, be entered into partnership with tho late' Mr. James Livingstone Macassey, and on the death of Mr. Macassey, in IBSO, Mr. Kettle took the lato Mr. J. F. Woodhouse into partnership, carrying on the legal practice under the name of Macassey, Kettle, and Woodhouse. In 1890, the late Mr. Kettle was appointed District Judge and Magistrate at New Plymouth. He subsequently held a similar office at Wangamii, and about seventeen years ago he received the appointment of Stipendiary Magistrate at Auckland, continuing in that office up to the time of his retirement a few months ago. Mr. Kettle was a fearless and courageous magistrate, who did excellent work in the discharge of his office, and always showed himself kindly and sympathetic towards the unfortunates who came under the ban of the law. He was the father of three children. One of them, Lieutenant Desmond Kettle, laid down his 'life for his country on. Gallipoli. There are two daughters, both of whom ure resident in England. The late Mr. Kettle leaves nlso three brothers—Mr. Nathaniel Kettle, of the firm of Williams and Kettle, Napier, and Messrs. H. G. Kettle nnd F. Kettle, both of Dmicdin. Three sisters also survive tho deceased gentleman. They are: Mrs. James Macassey (Dunedin), Mrs. John Roberts (wife of Mr. John Eoberts, C.M.G., Dunedin), and Mrs. Charles Hope (Sydney). Mr. P. S. K. Macassey, Crown Solicitor, Wellington, and Colonel A. F Eoberts, of the firm of Murray, Eoberts, and Co., are both nephews of the late Mr. Kettle. '
