FOR LOYAL SERVICE
A very pleasant little function took place in the Mayor's room yesterday afternoon, when Misses M'Dowell, Al.elhuish, and Sutherland (of Mr. \V. Pryor's staff) and Mrs. Davis (nf Mr. H. J. Stott's staff) were the recipients of gold fern brooches us a mark'of esteem for the work they voluntarily performed for the voluntary, motor corps in connection with the return of troops from the front. The Mayor (Mr. J. P. Luke), in making the presentation, stated wit the work done by the corps had been undertaken with consulerable difficulty, as the first munition the members gained about the return of a steamer was when it was announced to the general public, leaving little time for the executive to inform those whose oars wern needed. It was that special work which had devolved on the young ladies who were being honoured, and he was sure that such services were , appreciated by the community as a whole and by the returned soldier's, who had benefited by tke excellent organisation. It was a generous action on the part of the executive to remember the loynl service' which had been so well rendered and the spirit of comradeship and helpfulness which lay behind it. Captain W. Pryor also referred to the self-sacrificing 'vorfc the ladies lmd performed, and his remarks, and those ot the Mayor, were endorsed by Colonel Roberts. Messrs. L. R. Partridge and Lloyd, of the Motor Corps, also added testimony to tho good .work which had been done by the recipients. The Mayor also took occasion to -refer to the very valuable work which had been carried out in connection with the transports by Colonel Itoberts, a work which would be appreciated by tho community and the soldiers when the full tale was told. He had unquestionably proved to be the right man in the right place. (Hear, hear.) . Colonel Roberts, in reply, said that his work was now drawing to a close, but ho had deemed it his duty to hold on until the tide turned and the men fho had fought so well for humanity had ieturned to their native shores. It should bo mentioned in the case ot Miss M'Dowell that her brooch bore the letters "5.0.," which, interpreted, meant staff officer, an appellation which had been bestowed on her by Colonel Roberts.
