THE PORTUGESE ASSASSINATION
PRESIDENT'S ASSAILANT LYNCHED . Lisbon, December 16. President Paes (not Mfiehado, as previously stated) was assassinated at midnight, while going to the railway station to leave for Oporto. Three revolver bullets hit Senlior Paes. The infuriated crowd lynchod-the assassin. Senlior Paes died in*an ambulance station.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. London, December 16. ll'lio Portuguese Legation has announced that a Provisional Government has been formed under tho Presidency of Senlior Castro, Minister of Marino and Foreign Affairs.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. (Kec. December 17, 7.25 p.m.) Lisbon, December 16. It transpires that the President's assassin was not. lynched, but, badly injured before he was arrested. The police fired a" volley, killing three persons. The assassin's accomplice, Jose Costa, a Democrat, was arrested. He declared that soveral others, including high politicians, were implicated. Senlior Antonio Paes, brother of tho President, was wounded by a sabre in the confusion after the assassination. It is believed that the assassin belonged to the Young Republican League. It is understood that Senlior Barboza, Minister of the Interior, will temporarily succeed the late President Paes. The whole city continues to be agitated, and both Chambers of the Legislature! havei been summoned; while a strict censorship has been established over the news.—Aus.N.Z. Cable Assn.-Beuter.
