Cable news was received in Christchurch last wcek_ that Captain .1. F. Mills, son of Sir James Mills, had arrived back in London from Freiburg, where he has been a prisoner for over fifteen months.

The death of Mr. A. H. Bourn, the well-known auctioneer of the New Zealand Farmers' Co-operative Association, is announced by a Pres.s Association message from Christchnroh.

The death occurred at his residence in Johnston Street, Karoii, on Monday, of Mr. Dennis Hanratty. for nineteen vears a member of the staff of Messrs. E. W. Mills and Co., Ltd. Mr. Hanratty, who was 58 years of age,. was a natrve of Castle. Blaney, Ireland, and arrived in Wellington about 35 years ago. He has left a widow and three daughters. His elder brother, Mr. James Hanratty, who had also been employed by Messrs. Mills and Co., was killed in a lift accident in the firm's bulk store in Victoria Street in February, 1913.

News was received in Wellington yesterday of the death on December 12, on Gallipoli Peninsula, from influenza, of Lieutenant A. C. Pigou. Deceased, who ■was the eldest son of Mr. E. A. C. Pigou, of Spring Creek, Marlborough, left New Zealand in 19U with the Main Body, holding tho rank of sergeant in the Canterbury Mounted Rifles, and later on in Egypt was promoted regimental sergeantmajor. Lieutenant Pigou was with his regiment when it landed on the Peninsula, and remained there until shortly before the evacuation, when lie contracted rheumatic fever. On his recovery he was granted a commission, and returned to Now Zealand. He again left for fhe front with the Twenty-seventh Mounted Bifles, and had since been on service with the New Zealand Mounted Rifles in Palestine, where, ho served in Allenby's sensational drives which began at Gaza and ended at Aleppo. Ti is presumed that Lieutenant Pigou was on garrison duty at the Dardanelles when he contracted the illness which proved ■fatal. In pre-war days deceased was an enthusiastic Territorial, and had on many occasions represented Marlborough Province in tho Rugby football field. Lieutenant Pigou, who was about twentyfive, years nf aw, was at ono time employed in the office of Messrs. Moorhouse and Hadfield, solicitors, Wellington, but subsequently was engaged in fanning at Spring Creek. .
