JOHN AVESLBV'S RULES OF LIFE,
John AVesley's rules for health were written 170 years ago. Here aro .the rules ot the founder of Methodism as regards eating and drinkirig:— "The.great rule of eating and drinking is to suit the quality and quantity of' the food to the strength of our digestion,- to take always such a sort and such a measure of food as sits light and oasv\ on tho stomnch. "2. All pickled or smoked or salted food and all high-seasoned food is unwholesome; "3. Nothing condncea more to hoalth that abstinence and plain .f'jsd with due labour. "i. For studious nersons nbont- Boz. of animal food and 12 of vegetable in 2t hours is sufficient. "5. Water is the, wholesomest of all drinks; quickens tho appetite and strengthens the digestion most. "6. Strong and more especially spirituous liquors, arc a certain, though slow, poison. "7. Experience shows there is seldom any danger in leaving them off all at once. "8. Strom? liquors do not prevent the mischiefs of a surfeit nor carry it off 'so safely as water. "9. Malt liquors (except clear small beer or small alo of due age) are exceeding hurtful lo tender persons. "Coffee and tea are extremely hurtful to ..persons who have weak nerves." The "clear small beer or small alo of due age," referred (o in No. !), is a brewed .bavorago, of/en home-mado, such as is no longer to be had anywhere. It was almost a' universal drink in AVesley'6 day.
