A SUGGESTION FOR THE POSTAL DEPARTMENT

Sir,-Would you kindly'give space to a. little suggestion regarding an alteration ■to one ofour postal stamps I reter to the -lid. King George green stamp. Since our new war tax on letters has been en- : forced a certain amount of inconvenience has been given to the public in this way: A person wishes to register a, letter costing Sid.; this necessitates either one threepenny stamp and one Jtl. stamp, or two lid. and one id. stamp, or n2Jd. and two Id. stamps, etc. 1 • received one letter literally plastered with ' 3 d. ■stamps, seven in all, for registration. Thus using two or more stamps tor a letter, not only (takes up space, but touches the question of paper on wnicn stamps are printed. This paper is, practicallv speaking, very expensive just now, and also very hard to obtain, and, by the time all the stamps that aro unnecessarily used are totalled up, say, for one year, would amount to a great deal of paper. There is also the cost j of printing, counting, checking, and distributing these extra stamps to be considered; all take time and money. My suggestion is: Why not convert the 4-sd. stamp from that denomination to- one ot 3W » ■ This would to a certam extent avoid the above waste, it could be printed in the same colour, or, m the event of the lid. being wanted, a new die could be struck, and a new colour found—for instance, mnrone, red orange, or the slate of the old lid. stamp. In the event of it being black or slate, the word official as overprinted on somo could be in red or green. Trusting that this will be drawn to the attention of somebody of importance in the Government Stamp Department.-I am, etc., J. F. JOHNSON. Masterton, December 12.
