LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
WANGANIII OBJECTORS
Sir, —Tlip conscientious objectors - camp at Wanganui has been the creation of'a lot of discussion, and Lieutenant Crampton has come in for a good deal of lien ted argument. People seem to forget the quality of tho men whim this oflicer had lo deal with. Tho objectors who were in barracks at Wanganui were sent, there localise they refused poml-blank to protect their own country, and some of them were of tho opinion that they could get on just as well.under the German rule as under British rule. In (he face of this, do you think such persons could have been disciplined with kid gloves on? Was the German nation subdued without an iron hand? Lieutenant Crampton gauged the situation correctly, and dealt with his men accordingly. One sometimes lias to be cruel to be kind. This oflicer was dealing with exceptional men and he should not bo upbraided tor his conduet.-I am, etc., _ RETURNED SOLDIER.
