THE MEMORIAL CATHEDRAL

,Sir,-I am glad to see that your correspondent "I" His Stops" differs from many critics in (bis respect: that he would not only destroy, but would build. Hfi has no loveior Ilio cathedral scheme, but would improve (he state of the poor by housing them decently, educating them, training them to be clean, and helping them to earn a, decent living. All' very good suggestions, though old. But way foist them on to one branch of the Christian Church and not on to .those bodies that are created to deal with such mutters, viz., the municipal authorities and the Government? Surely this is their work ami thev fire already moving, slo«> lv, let us hope surely, in the direction of housing the labourers. Our education is already free to everybody. 1 doubt the capacity of money to do much towards cleansing people. Proper , education, pins soap and water, will do much, in this direction, and if properly directed should enable them to earn a decent living Seeing that this is already provided why stem the flow of our people 8 love and gratitude towards the Creator, when they feel that they must have in their midst, some adequate memorial of their glorious dead? With regard, to providing work for returning soldiers, I think that most of them have had enough of destruction, and would sooner eiuplov themselves in building a temple to the" honour of their God, and in memory of their gallant comrades who have I cone before them'in the destruction of slum areas! Your correspondent forgets that the building of a cathedral will provide work for many skilled and unskilled workmen for many years. Qiiarryinen, masons, wood carvers, and men of many trades will bo employed, and large sums of money will circulate amongst, that class.—l am, etc.,
