WAIRARAPA NEWS
The influenza epidemic in the Wairarapa is steadily abating. Although, a few cases • are being reported, they are not,.generally, speaking, of a serious'type. The residents of Maflterton and settlers of the surrounding district have responded handsomely to the appeal for help for those who have suffered through the influenza, epidemic. Already a .sum of ■£3200 hns been subscribed. Oalen sheaf chaff is at present selling in Mastorton at the high price of .£l2 103. per ton. ■ In a Booth Cup match, played in Masterton on Thursday, between tho Masterton A and Park Bowling Clubs, the latter won by 71 points to it. It is anticipated that an early petition will be circulated in tho Wairarnpa on tho proposal to set up a hydro-electric board under the Act passed last session. About the only attraction in Masterton during the Christmas holidays will be a bowling tournament. The weather experienced in the Wairarapa this season has .been the most eccentric on record. For the last few days it has been characteristic of winter, rather than of summer. Shearing operations; have been seriously retarded, and will not bo completed until well in tho New Year.- * The Masterton County Council is objecting to the demand made upon it in connection with the erection of a concrete bridge over the Tauherenikau Kivsr. Operations at tho Waingawa Freezing Works are to commence in the course of a few days.
