MAGISTRATE'S COURT
POLICE AND CIVIL CASES. Mr. F. V. Fra'zer, S,M., presided at the Magistrate's Court yesterday, and dealt with the. police cases. Mary-Jane. Smylie was charged with being ah-idle and disorderly person in that she possessed 'insufficient lawful means of support. It appears that tho woman was. living-at the Salvation' Army Hoine, whero she was. taken in after' her release from' prison. Sho had a quarrel at tho home and left, and late in the evening called at the police station and said she had no money, no friends, and nowhere to go:---The--police arrested her on tho charge. Sho had a long.list of previous convictions. Sho was sentenced to three years' reformative' treatment, the Magistrate 'stating that that was the only way to deal- with her. For discharging offensive matter in. Willeston Street John William 'Crotty was convicted and fined '£,%■ in default seven days' imprisonment. ._.-■' . For insobriety' two first offenders'■ who did not appear had their bail of 10s. .each'forfeited, and'another was fined ss. with .the-option of U hours' imprisonment. ■ ■ Samuel Doberty and ': Andrew Kelly, each with one previous conviction, were fined 10s. each, with the alternative of 48 hours' imprisonment, and Cornelius Phelan was fined 55., in default 24 hours imprisonment.' . •■'■■• . For being disorderly in' the' Pier Hotel whilst drunk, Patrick Dennis'Driscoll was fined .El, and >. for- refusing to leave licensed premises when requested to do so he was fined .£2, ■. • ■•■•'.■
CIVIL CASES.
• Mr. W. G, Biddell, S.M., dealt with tho civil cases. John 'Manners Mdrran, who was represented by Mr. Douglas Jackson, claimed from Joseph Isaac Goldsmith, for .whom. Mr. D. M. Crombie appeared, the sum ot .£ls or the 'return of two sewing machines: with gear and fittings, together with. £5 for damages for their detention. The'parties to "the action arc clothing manufacturers, and were formerly ■ in partnership,. and. had . been on friendly terms. Tho .def6nc'e was (hat there was no dobt; as the machines had been sold to defendant and were paid for. After hearing evidence tho Magistrate gave judgment for plaintiff for. <E3 2s. 7d., with costs. '••■•• In tho undefended case of the Office Appliance Co., Ltd., v. B. Peek, judgment was given- for plaintiff for 182175. 6d. and costs, 12s.
