CARTERTON NOTES
The temporary hospital which was opened in the school buildings in connection with the influenza epidemic is to be closed at the end of this week, and auy patients not convalescent are to be transferred to the Masterton Hospital, whore beds are now available. It was reported at a meeting of tho Carterton Influenza Epidemic Committee that a small case of lemons consigned to the committee from Wellington was opened in transit and at least two dozen lemons extracttd. The Carterton Red Cross Shop, which has been doing useful work in connection with the influenza epidemic, closed down on Saturday. The Mayor's Relief Fund at Carterton now totals ,£272. At the quarterly meeting of the Wairara'pa Licensing Bench at Carterton, presided over by Mr. S. L. P. Free, S.M., the police reports on the various hotels in the district wore read mid considered, nothing in them calling for special comment or action. Transfers as follow were granted :-Royal Oak Hotel, Carterton, J. W. Cordingly to L. M. Noylor; Tinuj Hotel, administratrix estate A. M. Plank to Mrs. Mary Plank. Mrs. Meria Fisher, administratrix in the estate of her late husband, licensee of the Martinborough Hotel, wrote applying for the consent of the Bench to her - carrying in the business pending probate of tho will. Consent was granted.. As a token of appreciation of their voluntary services during tho influenza epidemic, the Carterton Committee has decided to have'a letter of thanks artistically printed and signal by the Mayor, and forwarded to all who helped as nurses in the temporary hospital, at private homes, .tho hospital kitchen, and helped in various other ways.
At a meeting of the Carterton Influenza Epidemic Committee reference was made to the excellent voluntary services rendered by Sister Webb, who'happened to be visiting Carterton when tho epidemic broke out. Sister Webb, although only just recovering from an illness herself, when approached very freely undertook to do her best. The splendid success that had attended the efforts of the hospital were largely duo to the excellent skill and management of Sister Webb. It was unanimously decided that the Department to wliich Sister Webb is attached! be approached in (rder that when Sister Webb leaves Carterton she. will 'be in the same' position, as far as her holiday leave is concerned, as when she took charge of the Carterton temporary hospital. This is, that a further month's extension of leave be granted and that her ticket. to Rotorna. holds good. Mr. A. King, of Carterton, while engaged on Friday carting wood fell off the load owing to the horse moving while Mr. King was in the act of putting on his coat. He fell backwards on lo his hbad, receiving rather severe injuries, from wliich it will tako some time to recover. The churches in Carterton resumed services on Sunday last, but the weather prevented large congregations from attending.
