TWO BY-ELECTIONS

POLLING DAY, DECEMBER 19. Tho by-elections in connection with vacancies for the Wellington South and Palmerston North seats in Parliament have been fixed for December 19. Nominations close at noon to-day. i'or the. Labour ballot, the following wero nominated:—Mr. T. Brindle nominated by tho Social Democratic Party); Mr. A. L. Monteith (Soft Goods and Storemeu's Unions); Mr. J. Read (En-gine-drivers' Union); Mr. Jf. J. Roardon (Wellington Trades and Labour Council) ; Mr. R. Seinplo (Brooklyn and Wellington South branches of Now Zealand Labour Party' and Tramways Union); Mr. W. T. Young (Painters' Union). Labour circles favour the chances of either Mr. Robert Sample or Mr. MioJiacl J. Reardon, with a shade of odds in favour of the former. The candidates so far announced have been Messrs..J. Castle, George Frost, and the Labour nomineo (whoever he may be). So far there has been no mention of a National Government candidate for Wellington South. Mr. Castle is tho well-known Newtown chemist and a member of the City Council. Councillor George Frost is a valuer by occupation, and a very old resident of Brooklyn. He has been chairman of tho Reserves Committee, of the City Council for years past.. Mir. A. A. Whilclnw has also licen approached, and has decided (hat the iulluciua campaign has left him unfitted to face the rigours of an election campaign, for the present at any rate. For the Pnlmorston Norlh seat Messrs. Jus. Nash ((ho Mayor) and Mr. E. 11. Cralib have already 'been announced. Supporters of Mr. John Castle's candidature are asked to meet Mr. Castle this evening at 130 Riddiford Street to arrange for the coming campaign. Mr. George Prost notifies by advertisement, that it is his intention to contest the seat.
