Mr. Brace Bielaski; Government Alien Investigator, giving evidonce at the Senatorial Inquiry in regard to prorGermnn activities,'said .that Count Bernstorfl facilitated the Hearst newspaper correspondents to visit Berlin because lie knew Hearst was favourable to Germany's cause. William Bnyarcl Hale, a leading supporter of Mr. Hearst, was also in receipt of a salary from Herr Dernburg, ex-German Minister for Foreign Affairs. Mr. Bruae Bielaski Government Alien Investigator, continuing his evidence before tho Senate Committee on pro-Ger-man activities', said Bernstorff's message recommending William Bayard Hole's selection mentioned that Mr.' Hearst did not know Hnle as a paid German agent. Professor David Starr Jordan,, of Stanford University, protested against the inclusion of his name in Bernstorff's list of those favourable to Germany's cause. The only time ho ever communicated with Bernstorff was when he .forwarded an Australian lady's protest against the German atrocities.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. WHY GERMAN PROPAGANDA WAS UNSUCCESSFUL. Tho Government's Alien Investigation Committee produced a message from Bernstorff to Berlin explaining that it was impossible to make pro-German propaganda successful in tho United States because it was impossible to keep secret the fact that the .newspaper haa been bribed and because the Lusitania wns eunk.—Aus.-N.Z.
