MINERS' PHTHISIS

— A NEW BOCK DRILL. The desirability of replacing the rocE drills at present generally in use in quartz mines by modern water drills was urged upon the Government in the House of Representatives on Saturday in the form ol ! questions put to Ministers by membys. Mr. L. M. Isitt (Christchurch North} drew the attention of the Prime Minister to a recent demonstration of the new drill, which, as it eliminated dust to a great degree, was considered to be ablo to do much to safeguard miners from phthisis. The Department of Health, he said, already had power, for instance, to iprosecute firms using gas stoves—where the harm done was, "by comparison, small—and it seemed to him that the Department should be. ablo to take action against mine-owners who continued to use the old drillThe Prime Minister replied 'that he realised the seriousness of the position, and added that he would refer the matter to the Health Department. The Minister of Mines (Hon. W, D. S. Mac Donald), replying to another question on the subject, said that a further demonstration of the' working of the new water drill was being arranged. In his opinion money expended in proving' the capabilities of the drill would bo money well expended.
