. A NOBLE BUILDING PBOPOSED ANGLICAN CATHEDRAL. • ■ / It wtis decided soiiie time ago, owing to the more pressing claims, of' War enterprises, to suspend the -campaign'' to raise funds to build an Anglican Cathedral in Wellington. At that time a sum of over oGSO.OOO hnd been promised, indicating that the project had the support of a great many people. Now that the war.is over, the campaign is being pro'ceeded with. More the work of building can be begun a sum of ,£150,(100 is desired in cash and promises. When that financial goal is reached, the workmen will begin to erect the great cathedral which is to be tyiilt J>y the free-will offerings of a. grateful people, as a memorial to New Zealand soldiers who , fell in the war, and a thank offering for thu coming of peace and for the safe return of thoeo whom death passed by on tho battlefield. The plans of the cathedral have been prepared by Mr. Fraiik Peck, who VaR for several years the chief- assistant of Sir Aston Webb, 'An eminent English architect. The Cathedral'!is, to be built in ferro-concrete for stability, but ■ will be embellished inside and out with stones, including Ssav Zealand marble and .granite.. Judging from the plans and elevations, tho cathedral will he an exceedingly heantiful building, it will stand on the present'site of St. Mark's Church, overlooking the liasin Reserve, and this slightly elevated site will enable the lofty and eviiimetriciil lines of the building to be seen with 'the best effect.j At present the capital city of New Zealand has few modern buildings among its churches, much loss a cathedral. Christchurch has had n cathedral for many years, so lias Napier. . Money has been bequeathed, as a nucleus to bujkl one in.* Nelson; Dunedin already has- ibegun to build her cathedral. Yet the capital city has none. Coniidonco is felt that the people' will respond worthily to the appeal. Subscriptions may be made in the form ol\ Government Slock or War Bonds; and promised sums, if so desired, may be made in payments extending over periods up to five ypifrs. The first stop is to communicate with tho lion, organising secretary, Rev. C. ]?. Askew, St. Mark's Vicarage, Wellington.—Advl,
