THE INFLUENZA EPIDEMIC
NEARLY BACK TO NORMAL CENTRAL HEADQUARTERS WINDING. UP HEAVY DEATH ROLL IN UNITED STATES "Decidedly the quietest day we've hud yet," was the description given of yesterday's work at Central Headquarters in the Town Hall. This, coming after ii succession of days which have all indicated a steady improvement in the position with regard to the epidemic, is very reassuring. If further evidence is needed that the epidemic in Welinglon has been reduced to what might, by ronipan£on, 'be termed easily manageable proportions, it is afforded by the fact that tho temporary hospitals will not now, receive any fresh cases of influenza, and cases occurring now must be sent to the General Hospital. Instructions yesterday were, to "carry en" till noon to-day. Then, in all probability, the kitchen and the medicine department will go out of business. It appeals I hat the records department and the clothing , department aro likely to remain open longer than the. others, and that the ambulance department will hold one-t-ar, for tho removal of patients to their ho'mefl. Th'c Centres. \ll the centres havo now practically closed down, and cases a>ro being.dealt with at the Central.Headquarters in the Town Hull. As indicated above, it is expected that soon Central Headquarters will be closed down also, and that the General Hospital will bo ablo to cope with any demands arising out of fresh cases. The temporary hospitals of course still contain patients in various stages of sickness ot convalescence, and they will necessarily carry on till tho patients are fit to return to their homes. Kelburn Home. On Wednesday last there were' four admissions to tho Children's Homo at Kelburn, and on Thursday then; were five. Yesterday was tho quietest day yet experienced, as at i p.m. a- reporter was informed that there had been no fresh admissions. In accordance with a request mado by the Minister of Public Ilealth, the chairman of the Wellington Hospital and Charitable Aid Board invited all group commanders to meet in conference at tlio board's offices yesterday afternoon,, in order to ascertain definitely the number and nature of all eases needing relict. There was a full attendance of dologates, and after the chairman (Mr. H. Baldwin) hnd explained the object of tho meeting, ho called upon Mr. Trucbridgo to explain the various methods that could be utilised in (relieving tho need of all cases arising from tho recent epidemic. Lists of those requiring assistance wero handotl in to the secretary of tho board, who will classify them and forward on to the Minister of Public Health. ' The opinion was generally expressed that the State should in a special manner subsidise those wh,o undertook the guardianship of orphans', and that wherever necessary 'ample allowances should also be jnade by tho Government to all widows left with children, as it was felt that iho amount provided under tho Widows' Ponsion Act was totally iuadequato to meet their needs. A Fine District Record, The 'filial meeting of the Oriental Bay and Edseneath Epidemic Committee was held last - evening, when it was reported that tho district was now practically clear of tho epidemic. It was unanimously agreed that the local cost incurred in coping with tho epidemic should bo borne by tho committee. Tho whole of the motor-carß wero snpplied by residents, who declined to .mako any claim. Tho nursing and all domestic help was supplied voluntarily by tho women of the district. Other residents cheerfully sup-, plied holp necessary to carry on the'inhalation chamber, visit all houses, supply food and medicines, and report on all cases of sickness. The committee expressed its appreciation of tho ready assistnnco.it at all times received from Drs. Gibb and Shand. The organisation was tho subject of general congratulation, and appreciative votes of thanks were passed to the officer in charge and his wife and all voluntary helpers, including the Boy Scouts. Tho committee also expressed its deep gratitudelo all who helped, especially to tho good women of the district and tlio Sisters of Compassion, who nursed and comforted the sick. Tho motor-car owners were thanked not only for their services in their own difficult district, but also for their assistance in several other districts and in the evacuation of the hospitals. Mr. H. D. Vickesry and tlio. officer in charge (Mr, ,T. .1. M'Grath) wpre authorised to deal with Iho funds of the committoo and to settlo all accounts.
