An almost incredible tnlo of gullibility was unfolded before Mr. Bailey, S.Jli, when Arthur Patrick M'Guire, Janet Jl'Guire (his wife), Cecil Charles Jl'Cullongh, and Frederick John Wormald were charged.with conspiring to defraud W. J. Clippies of ,£l9l is. between December, 1915, and October 29, 1918. Charges of .obtaining this amount by false pretences irero withdrawn. Detective-Sergeant M'llveney, who conducted the prosecution, stated that Cupplcs, whilst working at Mount Mngdala Home, had become ennmoiired of ono of the female inmates, and he endeavoured to obtain her relenso through the M'Guiree, who produced two alleged Scotland Yard detectives, Wormald and M'Cullough, for the purpose.
