'THE NEW DEPARTMENT. When tlie forestry Report was introduced iir the Houijo of Representatives, Mr. ,T. A. Young .(AVaikato) suggested that the Government should make use of the wide, stretches of sandhills ore many parts of the: New Zealand coast. These areas could profitably he planted with trees. He mentioned an area of coastal land in Kawhia County. • Mr. 11.. G. Ell (Christchirreh South) mentioned a promise made by the Prime Minister on another occasion that the area 1 of the National Park would he,,extended. He protested against the cut-ting-out of timber irees in the National Park. If this policy were persisted in the park would become a scru'b area. Mr. Mnssey said he remembered the promise that'had been made. That promise would he kept. Legislation that was coming down would give power to the Forestry Department'to reserve areas that it considered should be reserved for future generations. Mr. Massey added that the new Forestry Department was .doing very good work already, and it would do even hotter work in the future.
