TWO ON A JOB
. SHOULD BOTH. BE PAID?. When many of the mala teachers of tho Wellington Education Board volunteered for military service or were called up it was arranged, that their places should be kept open for them. In the meantime temporary appointments- had to be made in order to carry on. Now some of these men are returning, and wish to take up their places onco more. There are times, however, when there is an hiatus between the time , they ere discharged from the Defence Forces and the time they reassume their duties with the Education Board. It - was decided at yesterday's meeting of the board that the men should bo paid for the time specified, but they had no money to meet such obligations. The chairman said ha had been to see the Director if Kducation, who was hedged round with regulations, and could not see that two should be paid for the one job. He had afterwards seen the Minister, who appreciated the position, and said it would bo all right. On the motion of the chairman,' it was decided:—"That the Department bo urged to provide tho necessary funds for the payment of returning soldiers from tho date their military pay ceases until they can be reinstated in the positions/from which they obtained leave; consequently, that money be provided to piiy up to the date of reopening of the schools the teachers appointed to discharge their duties during their absence, on military service."
