PAEKAKARIKI HILL
Sir,—Yet Mother fatal accident has occurred on this very dangerous hill, one■ of many within the last few years, ibut despite the fact that these accidents lake place with unfailing regularity, nothing is done by the authorities to protect the travelling public. Many of the accidents occur at about (he same spot, yet no danger sign is erected; in fact, there is not one on the hill itself, although it is admittedly one cf the most dangerous pieces of road between Wellington, ami Now Plymouth. I would suggest that "danger" or "go slow" signs should be erected ai certain recognised places, and that the local authorities be compelled to widen Hie road and erect strong fences where necessary. I notice that a rider has been added to the verdict urging the authorities to make the, road safer, and I sincerely trust some definite-action will be taken before the holidays, otherwise we may expect to havo a further series of accidents. This road is the ouly outlet from Wellington to the Manawatu district; in fact, is. used by anyone requiring to proceed overland (except by rn.il).to any place in the' North Island, other than Wairarapa, and ; for this reason it is essential that it, should be made reasonably safe to travel: by. I trust that strong and concerted, action will 'be taken by rill concerned to, see that this portion of the arterial highway is improved to an extent that those' who are compelled to travel it may do so with a greater feeling of safety.—l am ' eto " > action: " :
