MATRICULATION EXAMINATION

Sir,—ln view of the extraordinary circumstances caused by the epidemic uf influenza, I would suggest to the Senate, through the medium of your columns, that the matriculation examination bo decided this year on the "credit ,, system—a practice which is in vogue in connection with the senior free place examination in secondary schools. Ido not suggest that this should be adopted aa a general rule, but considering the manifest disadvantages under which candidates are labouring nt present, it seemed a 'fair way out of the difficulty. Boys and girls have been without proper instruction since the schools were closed throughout the country—i.e., from November 12, and this state of things will go on until the second week in January at least, liven when the restrictions of the Health Department have linen removed, it will tie a difficult matter for masters and mistresses to gather their classes together—in the 'case of boarders impossible—and in any event teachers would be obliged to sacrifice their holidays. To avoid these difficulties, it 6eems to me that, considering the abnormal state of affairs, a pass by credit could be arranged by headmasters, in consultation with their various staffs. I I would recommend this suggestion to the earnest consideration of the Senate.—l nm, etc., PEDAGOGUE.
