TRAGEDY AT KARAMEA
FOUR LIVES LOST -IN A SAND.By Telesrmili—Prosa Association. Westport, December 2. An awful tragedy occurred at Karamea last evening at G o'clock, accounting for the lives of Mrs. Tlieimer, her two children, and a man named Harry, Harris. ~ , The Karamea correspondent of the Westport "Times" has telephoned the following particulars:—At 9 o'clock Dr. Tlieimer, his wife, and two children went out from Karamea lo snend some little time on the Oparara Beach, a coupleof miles to the north. The doctor rode on horseback, but Mrs. Tlieimer and the family rodo in a gig driven by Harry Harris. ■ On their way home nt G o'clock the doctor forded the Oparara, the horso bavins swum from the south bank of the river. He called out to his wife that die tide was dangerous, and she hnd tetter go further down stream, where it was'thought Hie water was shallower. Harris <lid as directed. When half-way across the horse and gie; got among a quicksand, or "pothole," or something of the kind, and after a few splashes all disappeared. Tho body of Mr?. Tlieimer lias been recovered. Search parties are out.
