CHESS
The Wellington Chess Club, which was temporarily closed down on account of the epidemic, resumed its sessions on Saturday. Interest centred natiirnliy in the play-off between A. AV. O. Davie's and AV. E. Mason for the club championship. AVlien the match was interrupted thrge weeks ago the score stood at 2-0 in favour of Davies, as the third game, having been drawn,- did not count, the first to score three wins is to be declared the club champion. The fourth game was commenced on Saturday evenlug, and was not completed at "closing time. Mason is a pawn to the good, ami as ho has a centre pawn advanced to its seventh' square, which is well supported, his gamei would doiibltora bo taken for preference. A hard-fought finish may be looked for. The third, fourth, and fifth places in this tourney are also not yet decided, as there are"'si ill fourteen outstanding games to be a-counted for. An efforts is being made to get these disposed of before the Christmas holidays. A southern writer points out that- the sixteen competitors in this contest include hve ex-champions of New Zealand, and some other players' of practically equal calibre, and describes this tournament as easily the most important held in the Dominion since the championship congress in 1914; the quality of the "field" in this tourney is quite up to New Zealand championship form."
