THE ARAWA. ; Tho local office of tho S.S. and A. Company received word yesterday that tho Arawa, was to leave Sydney at noon. yesterday for Auckland, where she is due on Wednesday. After discharge she will load at Auckland, Napier, Gisborne, and Wellington. It is hoped to dispatch the vessel for London, via, Panama, before Christmas. SHIPPING FREIGHT BATES. Discuseing the possibility of shipping freights being reduced, Mr. Bennett, general manager of the New Zealand Shipping Company, said that the reduction of •25 per cent, announced this week was made by the British Controller of Shipping. Ho had increased the rates, and now had brought them down. The reduction operated on both outward and homeward cargoes. He thought that there would bo a further reduction of freights before long. Aβ to passengers' fares, tho Controller, at tho beginning of this year, has imposed an additional £40 on every class. There was every prospect that that impost would be removed soon. MESS-TABLE GOSSIP. Mr. TJ. Fitzgibbon, chief officer on the Ripple, has come ashore to undergo an operation to hie leg. Mr. B. Lewis, second engineer of Iho Kurotv, died at San Francisco on October 26 from influenza. The Kurow has left the following members of the crew in hospital at San Francisco Buffering from influenza,:—Messrs. T. C. Sawyers (Et'cond officer), T. Robertson (third officer), E. The Ecmuera is due at Wellington from Port Chaltncrn and Timaru on Sunday morning, and will leave port about December 10 for London, via Panama.
