Danwll (chairman) : reniinded '.the;board that it had contributed a like amount to the men of the Navy after, the .news of the' Battle of .Jutland. .In vi.ew of the magnificent part played-.-in ".the .war by the mercantile marine, ■ they were doing simple justice for services rendered to the Empire. Mr. It.' 13.; Sinclair seconded the motion. Mr. R. M.P., .said,.ttmt n6 ,'one yet know the." w'ondorfiil work . done by .the mercantile marine:" One heard of them blown up 'and .'signing'.on,, blown up again and once more .signing'on. They had truly' been' the , salvation ■ of .the Empire.. Had it not.t>een.for them Great Britain would..'have been ,{starved. into submission. Their, deeds made one feel proud to. be .a. unit—if an insignificant one-Vin.the British Empire. Tho mercantile,marino had been simply marvellous. He wished tho amount was £5000 instead of .£SOO.
Mr. J. G. Harkness said they owed an eternal debt of gratitude to the mercantile marine, which had sustained tho best traditions of those British people who go down to the sea in ships. The least they could', do was to assist tho dependants of those who, had sacrificed their lives, that they might live and the Empire he. free. The motion was carried.
