No epidemic can sweep through a city, as the influenza has swept through Wellington without causing a very great deal of hardship. The voluntary helpers v,;ho have 'been in and out of the houses of the poor and afflicted tell somo sorry tales of the financial plight somo widows and families have been, left in by the loss through death of t)ie bread-' winner. In (lie meantime such households are being provided for from day to day, with the assistance rf the Wei. lington Charitable Aid Board, bu.t such help only extends at present to the issuo of rations. It is plain to all who have been working so valiantly in connection " with the epidemic that the position of those who have been left practically penniless is one of the problems that will have to be considered immediately. The granting of financial i-id to such people was mentioned by the Mayor (Mr. J. P. Luke) in his prefatory remarks at the last meeting of the Citizens Vigilance Committee, but the subject was not discussed, and therefore 110 procedure was laid down for the guidance of group captains. Now tint the need is known to exist in Wellington Central, East, and South, the question will liavo to be faced. The Mayor announced yesterday that the sum of .CIOOO had 'been alreadv subscribed for relief purposes in Wellington, which sum might be made available for distribution smong tlia needy after careful inquiries are mads in each case.
