THE RUSH FOR HOME
OVERLAND EXPRESS RUSHED AT PALMERSTON. The process of demobilisation is being hindered by the transport difficulties. The partial dislocation of the Welling-ton-Lyttelton ferry service has made it impossible for the Defenco Department to send men 6outh as freely as would otherwise have boon the case, and the shortage of railway staff has hampered railway transport to the north. The north-bound express was "rushed" by soldiers at Palmerston North on Friday. About 200 men, newly released from camp, wished to board the train, and were told that only n. few could be taken. Tho men wore still pressing their claim when the train entered the station, ami, according to. the "JLnnawntu Times," they "made one wild rush and, overcoming the slight resistance of tho porters, stormed the train. Some of them went into the sleeping carriages, and woro only enticed out after a deal of persuasion. Others crowded into othor
compartments and perched themselves on (he sides of tho seats, (pcitly u> the ineonvonionco of passengers already installed. Sonic of them sat on the steps of tho platforms. Others simply stood up, and unless provision was made for them further on would probably have to eland all the way to Auckland!" ARRANGEMENTS IN ENGLAND THE 1911 CLASS TO RETURN FIRST. (Eee.
