THE LATE MISS HANCOCK
TRIBUTE TO HER NOBLE WORK
The funeral of Miss Janet Hancock, late matron of St. Mary's Home, Utaluiliu, took place in Auckland recently, eays an exchange. Prior to the interment at Otaliuhu, n connminion service, conducted by Bishop A. AV.,Averill, was held at Bishopscouyt, and attended by a number of tlio deceased friends. Among the ■ wreaths w;w one frow the stuff, and one from the inmates of St. Mary's Home '■ . In the death of Miss Hancock, Aucfc. land has lost one of its most nouie workers in the cause of litiiiianity. Her lifo was spent in the service of others, and she died in the sumo great cause. With Nurse. Dennett, Miss Hancock undertook duty at Kilbryde Hospital n short tiuio ago, and while nursing influenza- patients there, contracted live disease, from which, after a few days' illness, uhodied. Her splendid work at fit. Mary's Homo remains a lasting memorial to a life o' unselfishness and devotion to the needs o f others. When she first came to Auckland from England, about ten years ago, there were oiily-U sii'lfi' in the home; there me now over SO, and, in the meantime, literally hundreds of girls have benefited .incalculably from the training at the home, and the strong personal influence of its matron. Her outstanding characteristic was a greatness of heart, and breadth of vision that raised her to a very high place iu the affection of her friends, and of all those who came under the influence of her generous ministration. Her work for tlio child life of Auckland alone was of utmost value, for she inaugurated Dr. Truby King's regime at the home with most conspicuous success. Jn addition to tlio babies born there, many ailing babies have been sent lo St. Mary's Home by local doctors, while the fact that the infantilo death-rato there has been practically nil is sufficient pro°of of the great work that has been done.
