OBITUARY

DK. HENRY rOLLBN. Dr. Henry Pollen, who Inst week was reported to bs very seriously ill, died nt his residence, Boulcott Street, on Saturday morning. The deceased was one of the best-known practitioners in Wellington, and as Port Health Officer for some fifteen years past, was widely known and respected by the travelling public and shipping iiulhorities. Horn at Kingston, County Dublin, Irelaud he was educated there, and at the ltatlimines School and at Middlcton College, Co. Cork. He studied medicine at Trinity College, Dublin, where lie obtained the B.A. and M.B. degree in 1874, and the following year the M.Ch. Iho same year (1875) Dr. Pollen was appointed assistant surge-on to the Blaenavon Iron Works in Monmouthshire. After nine months there he accepted the position ol surgeon.superintendent to the iNew Zealand Government Emigration Department, and he came out to this Dominion in the ship Hudson in charge of. between three and four hundred emigrants. In 187G Dr. Pollen settled in . Uisborne, where he practised his profession for U vears. During his stay in Gisborno the local hospital was started under his supervision, and lie continued to be surgeon in charge until leaving the district. He also acted as medical oiheer to the various friendly societies, in 1890, liavinir been appointed surgeon to the Antipodean Lod-e of Oddfellows, he removed /to Wellington, where he commence! lie practice of his profession. Dr. Po Jen was medical referee to tho Australian Mutual Provident Society and to the iNew Zealand Government Life Insurance Department. He acted for the M™£cstn Unity and American Orders ni Oddii'llows for the Foresters and for tlic female Foresters, and was one of the physician:* of tho Wellington Hospital. In Wμ Bt. Luke (president of the Central Chamber of Commerce), Mr. Robert Scott (chairman of the Clyde Quay School Committee), Messrs. William Foster,- George MacMorran, AV. M. Huinmy, James Mitchell, J Robin, George Wilsoiu John Jack, James Hutcheii, William Kiungay, \lex. Veitoh, Eoderiek MTvenzio, 1). M'Laron, J. E. Jenkinson, and Captain Harvey. The service at the graveside was conducted by the Eev. 3. Kennedy Elliott, D.D. There were many very beautiful floral tributes forwarded as the last tokens of estcom for the dead, including handsome wreaths from the foundry employees, and the Clyde Quay School Committee, of which the deceased was chairman for a quarter of a century.

DE. A. W. T. O'SULLIVAN. Dr. A. AV. T. O'Sullivan, Assistant Health Officer, who died at Auckland on Thursday night, was a young medical officer who had been specially trained in public health work. The Acting Cluet Health Officer (Dr. Frengley) said ot him:' "Because of his personality, Ins mental capacity, his career as a student, work nobly done ou active military service, and, above all, his forco of character Aeneas AV. T. O'Sullivan was selected for special training as a health officer. His open, fresh, manly manner endeared him to all his colleagues; perhaps it was more than that—we loved him. His seniors believed that in him New Zealand could anticipate one of the strongest men for the public health service. - His devotion to duly in this epidemic stayed his course. Ho expressed his unwillingness, after partial recovery from the initial attack to do nothing while there wore so many heartbreaking calls for medical aid. Ho gave his aid with thai, determination so familiar to us all. A\ell no it said: 'O'Sullivan died to save others. The dispensations of Providence are lull of wonder. This very week hn was to havo finished the examination to entitle him to a full district health oihcorshin. Fate is. inexorable. Be there this happiness to his bereaved mother and relatives -he (Vied nobly doing his duty. His colleagues will miss his cheery presence, not for to-ilay, but always. Ho was a splendid fellow."
