EPIDEMIC GRADUALLY DECLINING IN AUCKLAND. By Telegraph.-Press Association. Auckland, November 21. The gradual decline in the severity of tho epidemic continues. The deaths in the hospitals from midnight on Tuesday to 10 o'clock-last night totalled four, teen. One ward in a temporary hospital is empty, and thare are vacancies in outers. The Takne arrived to-dav with influenza mi V;onTd. Throughout the round trip all the crew were more o; less attacked, bub the outbreak was of a mild nature. The third officer has been taken to hospital. Two of the passengers were convalescent, and remain on board. The passengers and crew wero allowed to land after inhalation treatMont. Two soldiers died on Sunday, but not from influenza. Their bodies wero buried at sea ml Monday. DECIDED ABATEMENT AT THAMES , Thames, November 21. There is a decided abatement of influenza in this district. No fresh serious cafj:s were reported at the hospital to-day. Many caws are now convalescent, but precautions will not bo relaxed. FEWER SERIOIJS~CASES AT GISJ3OIi.SE. G isborne, iVovembcr 21, The influenza epidemic show i an abatement in serious c:„;ts, though the disease is still rampant. The disease is present, in a milder lorm on the East Coast. Thirty death« have occurred at Gisborne during the pasc twenty days. At the request of the borough authorities business places are closing at 3 p.m. daily for fumigation purposes. The regular passenger steamer services to Gisborne are still in abeyance. The tram .service is to cease from to-day for a week. The town in thoroughly organised, and additional inhalation chambers tiro to be installed in the town and at tho freezing works. 'NO SERIOUS INCREASE AT BLENHEIM. Blenheim, November 21. There is no evidence that the epidemic is seriously increasing. There are !i8 cases in Iho Hospital, and two are serious. Two more deaths have been reported. Lady volunteers are rendering valuable aid in tho homes of those afflicted.

Of tho three practising in Ilaivera two are ill. The Hospital is full of patients, and the show buildings and St. Mary's School have been
requisitioned, and also aire full. Tho country position is made more difficult by the spread of the disease amongsL Maoris. The mortality has been comparatively light, but every activity in the district except that of lighting (he epidemic has been paralysed. The local authorities arc active aud doing splendid work. From noon to-day business in town has been closed to free move people to do voluntary work. EPIDEMIC WETJ, IN HAND IN CIIIUSTCIIURCH. Chrislchurch, November 21. There is little change to-day in connection with the influenza epidemic. Admissions to the hospitals yesterday were lifly-five. and the deaths nineteen. From midnight till noon to-day there were sixteen admissions to the hospitals and eight deaths. The Health Officer conaiders that despite these figures the position is well in hand, and he is lioj '-'iul oi' a spcedly termination to tho trouble. For the weok ended yesterday the influenza epidemic carried off four town residents, including a recently-returned soldier, six country residents, and one visitor. In tho same period two town and two country residents died outside, of Wcstland. Tho epidemic is now worse in tho country. Only one medical man is available for tho whole of Wcstland, and his services are confined to tho towin where local and auxiliary hospitals are situated. A medical student,' who wa.s sent to assist hero, had to go to bad immediately on arrival. It is considered that rjualified medical advico for country patients woii'd b? of groat value at this stage, and representations have been made to tho Government on the matter. The local organisation includes a fine body of willing workers, wVi are assisting the authorities in every way possible. DISEASE LESS VIRULENT AT GREY MOUTH. Greymoulh, November 21. A. relief train visited the Otira linn. .Many serious eases were disclosed, and four' bad cases., were brought in to the hospital. One patient expired on tho journey. Business places will remain closed'till tho end of the week, and no church services will be held on Sunday. There are many fresh cases, but the disease is not so virulent ns it has been. FEWER DEATITP IN DUNEDI.X. L'unjdin, November 21. The influenza cases being admitted to hospital are still increasing, bnt the authorities consider the turning point will be reached in a fs-w days. Tho number of recoveries from severe attacks of pieumonifi has greatly increased. The number of notifications of pneumonic, cases to-day to tho Health Department was 32 in tho Otngo hospital district, a decrease of three compared with the previous day. Tho cases in Dunedin Hospital number ?14, an increase of six. 1«. deavlis have been fewer than on .'-ny previous flay recently.
