GROSS EXPENDITURE, ,£207,374.

The report of the Soldiers' Financial Assistance Board for the month of October states that there has been a failingoff of almost 25 per cent, in new applications, as compared with the previous month, and also a slight decrease in the number- of cases actually considered by the board. • ■

The board met on forty occasions during the month, and dealt with 1(177 applications, including 239 reconsidered cases. Of this number 233 were withdrawn, 271 declined. 31 deferred for further information from the applicants, and IU2 grants weTe made. The month constituted a record as regards the number of meetings, the board finding it necessary to meet twice daily. Since the inception of the board in April, 1917, 43'J meetings have been held, and 18,619 applications have been considered, comprising 15,969 new cases, and 2730 rtuunsidered cases. Despito the decrease in the number of new applications received, there has been a considerable increase in the work of the other branches of the board, particularly in the number of grants actually approved by the Minister of Defence during the month. Grants in 1291) cases were approved, establishing a record by approximately 50 per cent. This represented an annual expenditure of .£33,077 os. Bd., and included 127 additional grants, amounting to ,£1930 6s. 6d., or a gross total to date; of 8828 at an annual expenditure Of .£267,374 as. The work of the pay section was, of course, steadily increasing, the actual number of warrants issued, 5228, being 20 per cent, in excess of the previous month. Payments amounting to £14,656. lis. 7d. were made during the month in respect to. the following applications:— <£ s. d.
