DEATH OF AN UNKNOWN MAN
Mr. I'. V. Frazer, S.M., held an inquest yesterday morning on the body of the man who dropped dead in the Strand Cafe, 35 Molcsworth Street, at 7.15 a.m. on Monday. The assistant cook at tho cafe hoard a noise in the dining-room, and on investigating found a man lying on tho floor apparently dead. Tho body was later removed to tho Morgue by the police. Constable Cattauach said he wont to the -cafo and examined the body. It was that of a man 50 years of age, about 6ft. high, strongly built, with dark brown hair and fair moustache. Tho body was clothed in a grey'coat and vest, two pairs of dark grey trousers (woll worn and patched), dark bluo woollen shirt, and a pair of old black boots (well worn). In a pocket was found 20s. 2d. in coin, a metal watch and chain, and two small keys. Tho constable added that from his police experience he knew'the symptoms of tho prevailing epidemic, and was of opinion that the man had died of tho disease The deceased had apparently been n wharf labourer or accustomed to manual work. Tho Coroner returned a verdict that death was due to pneumonia following influenza. Later in the day the body was idontieil by Henry Brown, of 53 Thorndon Quay, as that of Albert White, a Corporation labourer, who had resided with Brown for. tho past four months, and appeared to have had a heavy cold for n month past. Brown saw him leavo the house atG a.m. on Monday. Tho deceased, who was born in England, was about -IS years of ago and unmarried.
