BANKS CLOSE FOR A WEEK
e THKOUtfHOUT THE DOMINION. A meeting of the Associated Banks_was held yesterday to discuss what steps should bo taken to meet the present crisis. Every bank in Wellington has been working with a skeleton staff for the past week, and the strain is beginning to tell on those who have been left to carry on. It was decided that all banks should'close down altogether from 3 p.m. yesterday until 10 a.m. on Wednesday next (November 27) to relieve the attenuated staffs and to give those who are now convalescent ample time to recover. As the notico was very short many business people will be p'erturbed—perhaps, indeed, seriously embarrassed—but in the exceptional circumstances that cannot well bo helped, and people will have to carry on as best they can, pending the reopening of tho banks next Wednesday. The decision applies to all branches "throughout the Dominion.
Tlio action of tho six banks in closing down so abruptly will probably have tho effect of a sudden accretion of business in tho Post Office Savings Banks. There are many, traders in Wellington who cannot, afford to run the risk of keeping cash on tho premises who will probably seek the security that tho P.O. Savings Bank grnnls.
