"A DAY FOR'HUMILIATION"
Sir,—ln the old Bible dnys scourges' sueli as the present epidemic would have brought the people thus visited to their knees in prayer. Contrite hearts never jet sought Him in vain. To-day we find refuge in inhalation chambers, nasal douches, gargles, disinfectants, and all the resources of medical science. Noble as these resources are, in liiyvopinion they will ''avail us little until we humble our hearts before Him and acknowledge our sin. .He may punish' us in anger, but surely, not without extreme provocation. How many moments do we spare Him cut of oiir waking hours? Alas! not many. Eating, drinking, dress, the pursuit of wealth and, pleasure, gambling, tpovt, etc., fill- up the major portion of our dajs. God is but a name to the average man and woman, though formed in His image. But, however, surely He may chasten us in His hot displeasure for our iniquiticH, yet He is ever ready to heal us if we humbly ask Him. Will the. clergy of Wellington, please consider the < gravity of affairs? Tliey are the shepherds of the flock so bitterly' suffering. Wo look to thtfm to lead us. Let them meet together and name a day for humili.ttion. The fathers of old were not ashamed to acknowledge the justice of their punishment in times of forgetfulness. May we be as humble to-day.—l am, etc., ; BELIEVE.
