MAGISTRATE'S COURT

Mr. F. V. Frnzer presided at the Magistrate's Court yesterday, and dealt with the police cases. For insobriety one first offender was convicted, and discharged;, three others were each fined 55., iit default 24 hours' imprisonment; and another, who failed to appear, had his bail of 10s. forfeited. For using obscene language in Manners Street Thomas William Hughes was fined 2fls„ in default twenty-four hours' imprisonment, and for being found drunk* he was convicted and discharged. James Daniel Wilson, for committing a. breach of his prohibition order, was fined ,22, with the option of serving seven days. in gao\, and was convicted nnd.discharged for drunkenness.

Joseph Antonio Benedict, ■' a seaman, pleaded guilty to the theft of a rolledgold watch, gold chain, and pendant, of the total value of ,£l2 lis., the property of Harry Ludrisen. The accused and complainant were shipmates; arid tho accused took the articles from Ludrisen's bunk, and sold them for Jii Ids. ' When arrested accused admitted his guilt, and eaid he had spent all but Is. of the money in drink. He was sentenced to fourteen days' imprisonment, and ordered to refund the Mb.

An adjournment for n fortnight was granted in the case of Henry Joseph Owen v. David Sturrock. a charge of assault, and an adjournment".for a week was granted in the case of Norman Bennett, who was charged with travelling on the Cobar without paying his fare. ■

For leaving offensive matter in a public place, R. Alfans was fined £3, and 19s v in costs, in default, fourteen days' imprisonment. A youth named Horace Diinock, who fired a shnnghni at the back'of a motorcar and struck the occupant of the car, was lined 103., and costs 7s.
