EMPIRE'S DEBT TO THE NAVY
KING'S MESSAGE OF GEATITU.DE.
The following message from His Majesty the Kin? to the Navy has been received by Captain P. H. Hall-Thompson, E.N., C.M.G., Senior Naval Omcer ill New Zealand:— .■: "Now that the last and most formidable of bur enemies has acknowledged, the triumph of tho Allied arms on behalf of right mid justice, I wish to express iny praise and thankfulness to the officers, men, and women of the Boyal Navy and Marines, with their comrades of the Fleet auxiliaries and mercantile marine, who for more than four years have kept open the 6eas, protected our shores, and given us safety over since the fateful August t. 1914. I have remained steadfast h my confidence that, whether fortune smiled or frowned, the Navy would once more prove the sure shield of tho British Empire in the hour , of trial. "Never in its history has the Royal Navy, with God's help, done greater llvv.'rt- for us nor better sustained its old glories and the chivalry of the seas. With full and , thankful hearts the peoples of the British Empire- salute the white, the red, and the blue ensigns, mil tliosf who have given their lives for thi ib£. lam proud to have served in the Navy I am prouder still to be its hend on'this memorable day.
