WAIRARAPA NEWS

At a large meeting of railway servants at Mastcrton, tho following resolution was carried:—"That the secretaries of tho different railway societies bo. telegraphed requesting them to immediately approach tho Prime Ministor and Minister of ltailways and obtain for all railwaymen a general official holiday on the day following the signing of the armistice, and that- all railway work will cease on that day." A sum of .£317 18s. Cd. was taken at the Masterton Patriotic Shop un Saturday, in aid of tho Italian Fund. Owing to the development of influenza on a largo scale, the State schools in Masterton were closed yesterday. Thero are hundreds of cases under treatment in the town.

At the inquest on tho body of Mr. Phil. Crewe, of Gladstone, who was found drowned in a week, ti verdict of acidental death was returned. ■

About a dozen members of the staff of tho Mastcrton Post Office are at present suffering from influenza. In view of the fact that people from all parts of tho Dominion are travelling to and from Pcatherston, and tho town being in direct contact with tho camp, where some 2000 soldiers arc affeclod with the prevailing epidemic, it is essential that an inhalation chamber should bo established at the local roilway station. It is not surprising that a considerable number of Featherston households are affected, as nearly 1000 soldiers are being billeted in local public buildings—halls, churches, and Iho schools, and conveyances ai'o plying between the town and camp without fumigation being carried out. in tho case of such vehicles. Otherwise, the healthy isoldiers might as woll be given goneral leave.
