COST OF LIVING
Sir,—lt seems disgusting to an old etager like myself to read in your columns'the fuss about the cost of living. In the 'sixties, wages for working men averaged about four shillings a day. In fact, in *65 and '66 men getting relief •work from tho Government in Auckland were only getting two shillings and sixpence a day; and what was'the'cost of everything th.en compared with.to-day? Flour was 255. per 1001b., sugar 5d., and everything in proportion. Moleskin trousers, what the people would not wear today, were • 165.; a coarse blue shirt you don't see to-day, 9s.' I could go on to eliow there was no comparison to the cost, and no comparison to the discontent, nor the grumblers.- The trouble is to-day'(not as then tho want , of work, but the want of workers), pleasure and extravagance.—l am, etc.. • OLD FOGY.
